You can either choose between the 2, or purchase both and link them together. They are both stand alone games, but you can take your characters to both if you link them.

if you buy a factions key and add it to your original GW account, then that account gets acess to tyria and cantha and plus the account gets 2 extra character slots.

if you create a seperate account that account get 4 character slots but it can only access factions content.

What they've said is basically correct. Both Guild Wars: Prophecies and Guild Wars: Factions are stand alone, but if you only have one you will not be able to access any content from the other.

Also, there are multiple retail boxes for each game. The normal version is cheaper and is just the game itself, but the Collector's Edition of the games have special in game add-ons, nice maps, music CD's, art books... the works. I do believe that the CE for both versions also have special in-game items.

Now, if you're curious as to which one to get first, it doesn't really matter, but I'd recommend looking around here a bit first to try and get an idea what each game is like. Generally, Prophecies (original) is much slower than Factions, more spread out.

[EDIT] If you decide to get both Prophecies and Factions, it may feel a little overwhelming at first, but just remember that they are seperate games. Just take them one at a time, and you'll get your money's worth, no question.

The CE's do not have special in-game items. The only in-game items that you can get as a result of buying something from a store are from the preorders. There is also a Special Edition version of the original guildwars that has a few things similar to the original collectors edition as well as the ability to unlock a few skills and items for use on a pvp character.
